Why is it that so many Filipinos who grew up here in the States look down on “Fobs” and many other Philippine related things in general? In schools, it’s common to see Fil-Ams hate on the Filipinos who just came from the Philippines. They even start name calling, start beefs, and even fights with their own people just because they grew up in the homeland and don’t talk with an American accent.
I don’t get it.
It’s only been about 115 years since our people were freed from the Spanish and gained independence, yet we’re already forgetting our culture. Some of us even have the nerve to disrespect and laugh at it.
Do you think Filipinos from previous generations came to America with the intention to watch the future generations grow up to be cocky ass hypebeasts that make make fun of the native accent and the people who still have it (“Fobs”)?
Filipino Pride isn’t just about Manny Pacquiao and lumpia. It’s more than that. It’s about respecting your roots and your culture. That means respecting your parents and not making fun of people who came here from the Philippines just because they have “fob” accents.
I’m not saying us young Filipinos should stop being influenced by the culture here in America, I do believe that we have to adapt to this country a bit. I’m not saying that we should all learn Tagalog. Go ahead and be white washed and Americanized if you want, but at least have some respect and awareness about your homeland and it’s history instead of carelessly disregarding it. That’s the least you could do if you still have some care in the world about your own blood.

Yeah it’s sort of weird how that works out, none of those kids realize that their parents or their grandparents worked hard to get them to America for a better life. I would never imagine disrespecting the sacrifices they made for me!
